El Paso-based artist Adrian Esparza uses textiles to reflect on material culture and his own Mexican-American cultural heritage. After unraveling a sarape, he weaves the colorful thread around nails on the wall, creating incredible installations that explore mid-century minimalism, physical landscapes, and our relationship to found objects. The act of the sarape’s deconstruction and reconstruction references the dependence of present forms on past ones, and suggests new life and possibilities. Esparza will share his new large-scale, site-specific installation created for the Kimball Art Center.
Mexican artist, curator, and educator Jorge Rojas has worked for years to transform museums into more inclusive spaces. For his residency at Kimball Art Center, he will create People of Corn / Gente de Maiz, a collaborative art project and space where meaningful social encounters can occur. Building off his My space series, in which he invites the public to participate in a series of interactive, community-building projects, this work will focus on creative collaboration while exploring the importance of Maize/Corn as a food source, its cultural and spiritual significance to peoples in the Americas, and connecting across cultures.
Jorge will offer a brief introduction into the Gente de Maiz project and the goals of his residency. He has invited Maya Tzeltal, Maria Elena and Josefina Ku’lub, weavers and community leaders and Rosita Mendez, a resident of Salt Lake City and Milpa agricultural expert and story teller to offer a blessing of the project. Fanny Blauer from Artes de Mexico will share information on the significance of corn.

El artista, curador y educador mexicano Jorge Rojas ha trabajado durante años para transformar
los museos en espacios más inclusivos. En su residencia en el Centro de Arte Kimball, Rojas
creará Gente de Maíz / People of Corn, un proyecto de arte colaborativo y un espacio en el que
pueden producirse significativos encuentros sociales. Basándose en su serie My space / Mi
Espacio (en donde invita al público a participar en una serie de proyectos interactivos de creación
con comunidades) esta obra se enfocará en la colaboración creativa, explorando al mismo tiempo,
la importancia del maíz como fuente de alimentación, su significado cultural y espiritual para
los pueblos de América, y su conexión entre culturas. Acompáñenos con su familia y conozca al
artista, su práctica de arte comunitario y partícipe personalmente en el proyecto colaborativo de
Rojas: Gente de Maíz / People of Corn.
Adrian Esparza, artista de El Paso, Texas utiliza materiales textiles para reflexionar en cuanto a la
cultura material y su propia herencia cultural mexicanoamericana. Después de destejer un sarape,
enlaza el hilo de colores alrededor de clavos en la pared, creando increíbles instalaciones que
exploran el minimalismo de mediados de siglo, los paisajes físicos y nuestra relación con objetos
encontrados. El acto de deconstrucción y reconstrucción del sarape hace referencia a la manera en
que las formas presentes dependen de las pasadas, y sugiere nueva vida y posibilidades. Esparza
compartirá su nueva instalación a gran escala, creada para el Centro de Arte Kimball.
