About

Join Kimball Art Center’s Executive Director, Aldy Milliken, and Ceramists Hazel Coppola and Horacio Rodriguez as we demystify and unpack the artwork in our Traces exhibition.

Dive into expert insights on the intersection of contemporary art and ceramics, and leave with a fresh perspective on powerful storytelling potential. This event is part of our How to Look at Contemporary Art series, which pairs local experts with Kimball Art Center’s thought-provoking exhibitions to offer unique reflections and engaging discussions.

While adults enjoy this exhibition program, kids ages 5–12 can get creative in the studio! Led by a teaching artist, this session includes hands-on art-making inspired by contemporary themes in the exhibit —All materials provided.

This Event is Free to Attend, RSVP is encouraged.

Hazel Rodriguez Coppola is a Guatemalan American ceramic artist and educator living and working in Park City, Utah. As an artist, Hazel’s work is a reflection of her innate desire to remember, tell and preserve stories. Primarily working in ceramics since she was 16 years old, she is captivated by the materiality of clay, and the expressive potential of its movements as they relate to visually telling its own story and retaining its own history. Hazel is constantly inspired by the rich traditions, food culture, memories, narrated stories, jokes, and anecdotes from her childhood growing up in an immigrant home. She reflects on her own experiences, as well as the stories of her ancestors to derive her work.

Horacio Rodriguez is an artist and educator originally from Houston, Texas. He has dedicated himself to a career in the arts by majoring first in photography before finding his true passion: ceramics and sculpture. After graduating with an MFA in Ceramics in 2016, he received the Morales Teaching Fellowship from the University of Utah and moved to Salt Lake City to teach and further expand his studio practice. He was also recently included in Contemporary Clay, which was displayed at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts as well as Site Lines, The University of Utah’s Art Department faculty show at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Horacio is passionate about contributing to Salt Lake City’s Art community and supporting diversity in the arts.
