Youth Clay Handbuilding & Wheel Throwing Fall Session 2

Get ready to get your hands dirty in Youth Clay! In this hands-on 4-week clay class, young artists will learn the basics of clay handbuilding and wheel throwing. They’ll discover how to shape clay, create bowls, cups, and other fun pieces, all while exploring their creativity and learning new skills. Perfect for kids who love getting crafty but don’t get to use kiln-fired clay at home!  Kids Ages 8+ only.

Note on firing: All work will be fired and ready for pick up in the Kimball Art Center 7-14 days after your class. We do not ship class work. If artwork is not picked up after 60 days it will be recycled. *Since artwork may look different after firing, make your pottery or sculpture recognizable by carving a signature into your piece.

Introduction to Handbuilding Fall Session 1

This Beginning Handbuilding class introduces students to the fundamental techniques of working with clay using slab, coil, and pinch methods. Designed for newcomers to pottery, the course covers essential skills such as clay preparation, forming, and basic construction techniques. Through hands-on practice and guided instruction students will develop a solid foundation in handbuilding and produce a unique ceramic pieces that reflect their personal style and creativity.

Note on firing: All work will be fired and ready for pick up in the Kimball Art Center 7-14 days after your class. We do not ship class work. The $25 material fee includes a half bag of clay, with options including Rods Bod, Death Valley, and Stoney White. Porcelain is not included. Students wishing to use porcelain can get their material fee refunded and purchase porcelain separately at the front desk.

Clay Club

Explore the creative possibilities of clay in this fun and welcoming ceramics class for teens! Students will learn both hand-building and wheel throwing techniques, including pinch pots, coil building, slab construction, and the fundamentals of throwing on the pottery wheel. Through guided projects and opportunities for personal exploration, participants will create both functional pottery and imaginative sculptures while experimenting with texture, form, glazing, and surface design. Whether you’re new to ceramics or have prior experience, this class offers a supportive studio environment to build skills, gain confidence, make friends, and create unique works of art.

Advanced Handbuilding Summer Session

This eight-week session provides artists with the opportunity to design, form, and complete a hand-building project using slab, coil, or pinch construction methods. Students will explore surface and glazing techniques tailored to enhance their project, allowing for true freedom in form. Participants will acquire the skills needed to create both functional and sculptural vessels, incorporating carved patterns, attached elements, underglazes, and glazes to decorate their hand-built pieces. By the end of the course, students will have crafted distinctive ceramic art pieces that showcase their creativity.
