Evening Beginner Wheel Throwing Summer Session

This eight-week course introduces students to the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel, covering essential techniques, trimming, and glazing applications. Designed for beginners, this class ensures a tailored learning experience to meet their specific needs. A series of skill-building practices will introduce you to the joys of working with clay on the wheel. The basic skills of wheel-thrown pottery will be taught through step-by-step instruction in clay preparation, throwing on the wheel, trimming, handles, and the firing process. Students will learn how to throw a cylinder, cup, and bowls. We emphasize this class structure to provide beginner students with focused instruction, making the most of the invaluable learning opportunities offered by our qualified instructors. If you’ve taken this course more than three times, we ask that you enroll in one of our more intermediate or advanced classes. 

Note on firing: All work will be fired and ready for pick up in the Kimball Art Center 7-14 days after your class. We do not ship class work. If artwork is not picked up after 60 days it will be recycled. *Since artwork may look different after firing, make your pottery or sculpture recognizable by carving a signature into your piece. 

The $50 material fee includes a bag of clay, with options including Rods Bod, Death Valley, and Stoney White. Porcelain is not included. Students wishing to use porcelain can get their material fee refunded and purchase porcelain separately at the front desk.

 

Evening Intermediate Wheel Throwing Summer Session

Our eight-week Intermediate Wheel Throwing class is designed for students with a foundational understanding of wheel-throwing who are ready to advance their skills. This weekly course delves into more complex techniques, refining throwing methods, and exploring decorative elements. Students will enhance their proficiency through various projects. Each session combines demonstrations, hands-on practice, and personalized feedback from our experienced instructor, fostering a supportive and creative learning environment to help students elevate their pottery skills. This class is not intended for beginner potters. Please check our calendar to find a more appropriate course.

Daytime All Levels Wheel Throwing Summer Session

Explore the art of ceramics at the wheel in this all-levels class designed for both beginners and returning students. Whether you’re brand new to wheel throwing or looking to refine your skills, this class offers step-by-step instruction tailored to your experience level. Students will learn and practice essential techniques such as centering, pulling walls, shaping forms, trimming, and glazing. Beginners will build a strong foundation, while more experienced students will focus on improving consistency, exploring new forms, and developing their personal style. With demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individualized feedback, this class provides a supportive and creative environment to grow your skills and confidence on the wheel. Students will finish the course with a collection of functional ceramic pieces.

All ability levels are welcome. This is an 8-week course.

Wheel Try It

This class is ideal for beginners who are excited to learn the basics of wheel throwing in a low-stakes environment, and a great precursor to a multi-week course. A Studio staff member will provide a demonstration at the beginning of class and offer guidance as students practice at their own wheels. Fees cover the cost of class and clay for up to two completed pieces, including glazing and firing. Anyone ages 8 and up are welcome, but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Completed pieces will be fired and ready for pickup from the Clay Studio within 2 weeks after your class. We do not ship artwork, and any pieces not picked up within 60 days will be recycled.

*Note: Pieces will look different after firing. Taking photos of your piece and glaze selection after throwing and adding a signature can help identify your work when it’s time for pickup.
