About
Chac Mool: A Performance by Jorge RojasChac Mools are Mesoamerican sculptures representing a reclining figure leaning on its elbows and supporting a bowl, possibly symbolizing slain warriors carrying offerings to the gods. The bowl was used to hold offerings including tortillas, tobacco, incense, and heart sacrifices. Aztec chac mools bore water imagery and were associated with Tlaloc, the rain god. Their symbolism placed them between physical and supernatural realms, as intermediaries with the gods. Rojas is interested in Indigenous migration across the Americas and in Aztlan, the mythical homeland of Aztecs, which some historians believe could have been Antelope Island on the Great Salt Lake. Aztec legend says little about Aztlan’s location, apart from that it was a small island on a lake north of Mexico City.
Jorge Rojas is a multidisciplinary artist, performer, curator, and educator, working with socially engaged art, installation, and performance. Rojas has performed live and virtually for over fifteen years, presenting his work in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. His performance art focuses on a number of topics ranging from spiritual histories, interpretations of ancient rites and customs, and abuses of power. Rojas’s performance practice delves into realms of the personal and the public, drawing inspiration from lived and shared experiences as a Mexican immigrant living in the United States. He positions himself dialectically and strategically between cultures, questioning notions of nation, tradition, and identity, combining Mexican cultural themes that range from contemporary to Mesoamerican topics as a way to bridge the past with the present. Whether he’s performing live, virtually, or for video, Rojas holds space for participants and viewers that invites sharing, intimacy, joy, protest, and empowerment, often working towards social and racial justice.
Please arrive early. The performance will begin promptly at 6pm and will last approximately 30 – 45 minutes.
