PARK CITY KIMBALL ART CENTER HOSTS RETROSPECTIVE BY ICONIC WESTERN ARTIST: DON WELLER
“Don Weller: Another Cowboy” opens June 17th, an homage to the American Cowboy
Park City, UT – The Kimball Art Center is proud to announce Don Weller: Another Cowboy, a retrospective exhibition on view June 17 through July 24, 2016 at the art center’s location on Kearns Boulevard.
“This retrospective is a unique opportunity to view works from all stages of Weller’s celebrated career., says Kimball Art Center Executive Director Robin Marrouche. “Weller’s work is a contemporary look at the cowboy traditions of the American west.”
Don Weller’s heroes have always been cowboys. Beginning with his rodeo days in high school, he was captivated by their deep connection with animals and the land. After studying fine arts, Weller reluctantly left his horses behind and started a long and noteworthy career in graphic design and illustration. His work could be found on record covers, hundreds of magazine pages, covers for TIME, posters for the National Football League and the 1984 Olympic Games. Weller also holds the considerable honor of creating five stamps for the United States Post Office.
After moving to Utah from big city life in the mid-1980s he rediscovered his love for rural lands and the world of cowboys, creating the ongoing inspiration for his current endeavors. Working exclusively in watercolor and gouache, Weller’s deft hand and keen understanding of composition and color expertly captures the beauty of horses, the dynamism of their movement or the stillness of their repose, and the relationships they have with those who ride them. Weller is currently represented by the Montgomery Lee Gallery at 608 Main Street in Park City.
Weller has received abundant recognitions, including Bosque Conservatory, Western Artist Association, American Plains Artists, and is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators.
