Art can play a big role in a child’s development, providing them with an outlet for creativity, building fine motor skills, and boosting self-confidence. At the Kimball Art Center, our art classes for kids are designed to introduce young artists to a world of creative possibilities in a fun and supportive environment. Here’s everything you need to know about our programs for children, and how they can help spark a lifelong love of art.

Why Enroll Your Child in Art Classes?

Art classes for kids are about much more than just having fun with paints or clay. Studies show that art education can improve problem-solving skills, patience, and self-expression. For children, creative exploration is a way to build confidence and learn how to communicate visually, even before they master language skills. Art also encourages kids to be curious, try new things, and feel proud of their unique creations.

Types of Art Classes for Kids at Kimball Art Center

Our classes are tailored to fit different age groups and skill levels, allowing every child to grow and explore at their own pace. Here are just a few examples of what’s available for young artists:

  • Painting and Drawing – Kids can explore colors, shapes, and techniques, from finger painting and watercolors to pastels and more. These classes are great for children who love to express themselves on paper and try out different styles.
  • Clay and Sculpture – Working with clay is not only fun but also great for building hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Kids will learn about shapes, textures, and structure while creating sculptures, pottery, and even hand-built pieces.
  • Summer Art Camps – During school breaks, Kimball Art Center explodes with early childhood activities and camps. Often, these sell out quickly, so we invite parents to become Art Center members to take advantage of early registration and discounts.
  • Seasonal and Themed Workshops – During holidays or special events, we offer themed workshops where kids can create art related to the season or learn about different cultural traditions through creative projects.

Do Kids Have Access to Art In Utah Schools?

Sadly, art classes aren’t part of the standard curriculum in most Utah schools. Kimball Art Center has partnered with Elementary Visual Arts (E.V.A.) to provide curriculums and resources that bring art education to students and ensure they receive critical access to the visual arts in schools. We also offer art “tours,” delivering presentations and leading hands-on workshops in schools across the state to bring art to kids where they are.

What to Expect in a Kids’ Art Class

Our classes are led by experienced instructors who are skilled at teaching young children in a way that is fun, safe, and engaging. Each class is designed with age-appropriate activities, so children can learn at their own pace while trying new things. Instructors offer guidance and encouragement, helping each child feel comfortable and empowered in their creative choices.

Classes are hands-on, with plenty of time to explore materials and techniques, and kids often get to take home their creations to share with friends and family.

Benefits of Art Classes for Kids

  • Boosts Confidence – Every time a child completes a project, they build confidence in their abilities. Seeing their work displayed or shared is a big source of pride for many young artists.
  • Encourages Patience and Focus – Working on art projects teaches kids how to focus on details, follow instructions, and complete tasks. This focus can transfer to other areas of their lives, from academics to social skills.
  • Develops Creativity – Art classes allow kids to explore their imaginations and think outside the box. They’ll learn that there’s no “right” way to create art, which fosters an open mindset and a willingness to experiment.
  • Improves Fine Motor Skills – Activities like drawing, painting, and working with clay help kids develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which are essential for writing and other tasks.
