Bonnie Sucec and Susan Beck play a game of telephone with their collaborative artworks. One artist will work on a piece in their studio, verbally describe it to the other via a single phone conversation, then the other uses the verbal description to create their own artwork. The conversation results in a map onto which the artist layers and integrates their personal practice. This exercise is not meant to create two duplicate drawings but to push each artist to greater personal fluidity within a very complex visual arena. The result is a meditation on communication, partnership, and artistic voice.
Students who participate in A.R.T.S. school tours for Out of Sight/In the Mind will learn about the unique artistic process of Bonnie Sucec and Susan Beck. They will then create an illustration with oil pastels that will be based on a story. The stories will vary based on grade and will be taken from fables, fairytales and Greek mythology. Academic emphasis will be placed on Language Arts and listening skills.
