About

In honor of the 100th anniversary of film in Utah, this exhibition showcases contemporary artists who explore film as both a medium and a metaphor.

Cinema, when it emerged in the late 19th century, revolutionized visual storytelling by blending moving images with sound and narrative to create an immersive experience for viewers. It quickly developed into a highly consequential art form–one that has ultimately influenced our shared cultural consciousness and perception of reality in today’s world.

In Moving Pictures, artists engage with the language and physical material of this popular medium. They examine and transform the traditional cinematic experience in equally compelling ways. From Rosa Barba’s sculptural and kinetic use of celluloid film strips to Matthew Barney’s exploration of narratives extending beyond the screen, the works in this exhibition draw our attention to the histories and conventions of film while also offering meaningful meditations on time, memory, and perception in deeply resonant ways.

Creating thought-provoking reimaginings of the language of film, the artists in Moving Pictures transform this familiar medium in both subtle and dramatic ways. Like cinema has done over the past century, their works powerfully transport us to other times and other places, revealing myriad explorations of the human experience.
