Downy Doxey-Marshall: The Stitching Years

September 28, 2018 by

The Stitching Years represents a body of work created by mixed-media artist Downy Doxey-Marshall between 2004-08. Armed with a palette of thread and the power of nostalgia, her work speaks to the impact of clothing and furniture in our daily lives. She creates tactile portraits featuring these treasured objects, which often become synonymous with the people who wear and use them.

Doxey-Marshall writes, “I decided to show myself during these years. By creating self-portraits with the focus diverted to my attire, I could be present and hidden in the same piece. Jackets and robes became the stars. The patterns were created by the thread, like a trail left from a memory. Time passes while we live out our lives in the spaces filled with the things we collect and the people we love.”

Body and Soul

August 27, 2018 by

In today’s social media-driven landscape, we are surrounded by portraits — from candid snapshots to highly-staged selfies. Body and Soul features 24 Utah-based artists and explores the lasting power of this classical genre across contemporary painting, photography, text-based installations, and more. Established tropes are both embraced and reinvented, presenting diverse approaches to portraiture as a means of commemoration, reflection, and social critique. From faithful likeness to fantasy and fracture, the power of portraits is that they are about more than what we look like; they reveal who we are.

Participating artists include Adrianna Allegretti, Emily Dyer Barker, Lynn Blodgett, Trent Call, Lee Cowan, Downy Doxey-Marshall, Mark Elliot, Dennise Gackstetter, Megan Knobloch Geilman, Bailey Genevieve Hatcher, Tom Hoffman, Amy Jorgensen, Clayton Keyes, Natalie Kirk, V. Reclaimed: Mixed-media Paintings by Erin Westenskow Berrett

June 19, 2018 by

Known for her highly representational oil paintings of everyday objects, Erin Westenskow Berrett has recently begun a new trajectory in her work. In the midst of experimenting with bolder strokes, larger palettes, and new subject matter, she also began experimenting with a new medium — paper.

Berrett begins her new compositions with hundreds of cut paper pieces from reclaimed magazines. As with her oil paintings, she works from dark to light and from big shapes to small. Combining “already made” textures and colors, she represents the familiar in unexpected ways, embracing just enough dissonance so that it becomes new again.
