BRANDed PC Pop-Up Shop

October 30, 2017 by

BRANDed PC, a pop-up shop created by Park City Summit County Arts Council to highlight local creative brands, will be in the Kimball Art Center’s Main Gallery December 4-10. The pop-up will tell the story of Park City’s creative makers—those that have boldly moved a vision from idea to product, and will be a one-stop-shop for locals and visitors to interact with our local brands and makers.

BRANDed PC is a celebration of the power of community, the power of buying local and the power of our local visionaries, makers and risk takers.

We are excited to provide the space for this year’s BRANDed PC pop-up shop in our Main Gallery and also curating our own booth that will feature the work of creatives in our Kimball community. Staff members, teachers and Kimball Clay Studio members will all have work for sale.

HOURS:

  • Monday, December 4 – Friday, December 8: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 9 – Sunday, December 10: 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

ACTIVATIONS:

In conjunction with BRANDed PC, we will be showcasing the Kimball community through four activations. All are free or very low cost and we ask you make a small donation to support future community driven programming.

  • Be a Maker (Registration Full)
    • Tuesday, December 5: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., Main Gallery
    • Nan Gray of Park City Professional Artists Association will provide an opportunity for participants to hand make “mail-able art”- personal note cards or mini paintings using watercolors that can be given to someone you’d like to have “that little something special.” This workshop will be capped at 15 people.
  • Biz Development 101 with Pando Labs
    • Thursday, December 7: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Main Gallery
    • Pando Labs are interested in helping creative makers and artists build a business, idea, product, vision etc. Ted and Julia from Pando Labs will be hosting a talk to share information about what they do and how they can work with artists and creative makers to achieve their goals. No registration required.
  • Winemakers Talk with Old Town Cellars
    • Friday, December 8: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
    • Old Town Cellars, the exclusive wine label of BRANDed, will be giving a winemakers talk accompanied by wine for purchase. Old Town Cellars represents the future of winemaking – absent of ego, full of flavor and defined by the community and culture in which it’s made. No registration required.

David Habben: Flow

September 25, 2017 by

David Habben has filled sketchbook after sketchbook with what he calls his “strange doodles”—curious characters and creatures that come to life in his highly detailed ballpoint and watercolor pencil drawings. But his work has simultaneously evolved in another direction. Two years ago, he began collaborating with the University of Utah’s School of Dance program, where he embraced a new creative dialogue. Gaining inspiration from the dancers’ movement, he created a series of abstract paintings meant to invoke the energy, power and flow of what he was witnessing. Like the movement of the dancers, each rapid brushstroke was to be deliberate and thoughtful—to be placed specifically somewhere rather than anywhere. You can experience Habben’s process firsthand and be directly involved in the process of creating work displayed in Flow by taking Flow: The Workshop.

David Habben: Flow at the Kimball Art Center will unite the artist’s two creative modes—the personal one within the pages of his sketchbooks, and the collaborative one of his Be Somewhere series. Here, the abstract compositions of Be Somewhere—work that documents time, place and energy—become the base for a new story, oftentimes with the wit and humor that is characteristic of his sketches.

Join us on Friday, December 15, for a unique performance in which Habben will be joined by dancers from the Duhaime Movement Project. While watching them perform, Habben will create a new large-scale painting. This newly-created piece will be presented alongside Habben’s original sketchbooks and captivating compositions that bring these two worlds together. Please RSVP here.

David “HABBENINK” Habben is an award-winning artist and illustrator based in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition to his fine art practice, his work can be found in everything from children’s books to editorial illustrations for The Wall Street Journal, as well as public murals, advertising campaigns and even snowboards for Rossignol. Habben received his BFA in Illustration from Brigham Young University in 2006 and his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Utah in 2017. This year, his work was a winning entry for Creative Quarterly Issue 49 in Illustration and his characters now fill the pages of his two newly-published coloring books from Page Street Publishing, The Search for the Lightbulb Burglar and The Explorer’s Journey.

Jimmi Toro: Kindle a Light

August 17, 2017 by

Jimmi Toro’s new multi-media exhibition is inspired by Carl Jung’s observation that, “As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.” Toro is a Salt Lake City-based painter, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer. In Kindle a Light, he brings together all of these creative pursuits to present an immersive experience for the viewer. Music, art and video combine to examine humanity in its many forms. Through an evocative use of color and line, and sound and movement, his work speaks to the deep connections that bind us all.

Kindle a Light is also a unique opportunity to view the creative process. In this interwoven exhibition, each piece inspires the other—a song creates a visual image, a painting comes to life in video. Sight and sound combine, creating a new connection between artist and viewer. It is a complete immersion in the intrepid and thoughtful mind of Jimmi Toro, shedding a brilliant new light on the darkness of mere being.

Kindle a Light will also feature artwork by students in the Kimball’s Young Artists’ Academy, who worked closely with Toro in Fall 2016.

Ink for Alaska

May 16, 2017 by

In these critical times of preservation, individuals often ask, “but what can I do?”

Ink for Alaska is a unique example. Portland, Oregon artists, Barbara Mason and Alex Prentiss, supporters of The Alaska Wilderness League, used their talents to help raise awareness and money for the League. Believing in the effort to preserve Alaska’s wild lands and waters, they creatively developed a project using their life experiences in printmaking and invited others to participate in a juried printmaking exhibit showcasing the Art of the Print, with work inspired by Alaska and the northern wilderness. Any printmaking process was permissible.

Works were submitted to an online website for jury, and a distinguished panel of artists chose the winners and 12 works were then framed for travel throughout the United States.  You can see all the entries here. Twelve artists were selected to participate in the traveling exhibition, they include:

Eric Hoffman
Mimi Fujino
Dale Stavroff
Eleanor Erskine
Clare Carpenter
Charlotte Van Zant-King
Cynthia Brinich-Langlois
Paula Voss
Amy McGregor-Radin
Cary Cochrane
William Hays
Jack McCarthy

Richard Serra: Prints

April 6, 2017 by

Richard Serra is well-known for his monumental steel sculptures which arc and spiral, altering a viewer’s experience of space as they move around them. In Richard Serra: Prints, the Kimball Art Center offers a fresh look at this artist’s practice. Moving back and forth between these two mediums, he explores the complex relationship between his large-scale sculpture, the body and surrounding space. His pared-down black and white prints are highly evocative of this physical experience and, with new approaches to traditional techniques, represent 45 years of compelling experimentation in the medium of printmaking. This exhibition is drawn from the collections of the Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation.
