Ink for Alaska

May 16, 2017 by

In these critical times of preservation, individuals often ask, “but what can I do?”

Ink for Alaska is a unique example. Portland, Oregon artists, Barbara Mason and Alex Prentiss, supporters of The Alaska Wilderness League, used their talents to help raise awareness and money for the League. Believing in the effort to preserve Alaska’s wild lands and waters, they creatively developed a project using their life experiences in printmaking and invited others to participate in a juried printmaking exhibit showcasing the Art of the Print, with work inspired by Alaska and the northern wilderness. Any printmaking process was permissible.

Works were submitted to an online website for jury, and a distinguished panel of artists chose the winners and 12 works were then framed for travel throughout the United States.  You can see all the entries here. Twelve artists were selected to participate in the traveling exhibition, they include:

Eric Hoffman
Mimi Fujino
Dale Stavroff
Eleanor Erskine
Clare Carpenter
Charlotte Van Zant-King
Cynthia Brinich-Langlois
Paula Voss
Amy McGregor-Radin

Richard Serra: Prints

April 6, 2017 by

Richard Serra is well-known for his monumental steel sculptures which arc and spiral, altering a viewer’s experience of space as they move around them. In Richard Serra: Prints, the Kimball Art Center offers a fresh look at this artist’s practice. Moving back and forth between these two mediums, he explores the complex relationship between his large-scale sculpture, the body and surrounding space. His pared-down black and white prints are highly evocative of this physical experience and, with new approaches to traditional techniques, represent 45 years of compelling experimentation in the medium of printmaking. This exhibition is drawn from the collections of the Jordan D. Schnitzer Family Foundation.

Art Starts Here: A KAC Instructor Showcase

March 24, 2017 by

This semester, Kimball Art Center is offering more than 120 classes in media ranging from painting to metals to weaving. This robust schedule of unique and meaningful creative opportunities would not be possible without our instructors. They invigorate the studios with energy, skillfully teach new techniques and perspectives and foster an environment in which others are inspired to create.

Art Starts Here is an opportunity to see work by eight of these instructors, focused on painting, drawing and digital art. Including work by Zac Campbell, Nathan Jarvis, Karen Kurka Jensen, Emily Kerr, Jeanne LaRae, Ali Mitchell, Anna Moore and Heather Stamenov, the exhibition demonstrates the diversity of their passions and talents, and celebrates the impact these artists have on the Kimball Art Center and our larger creative community. They are the driving force behind what we do.

Wasatch Back Student Art Show: Art and the Environment

February 27, 2017 by

The annual Wasatch Back Student Art Show (WBSAS) was created to showcase the artwork of aspiring young artists, grades K-12, living in Wasatch and Summit Counties. This year’s exhibition will feature artwork that incorporates the theme “Art and the Environment.″

With a sense of reverence and inquiry, artists have reflected on man’s relationship with the natural world for thousands of years. From Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty to the work of local painter Mark Crenshaw — artists continue to explore this connection in uniquely meaningful and varied ways. It is in this spirit the theme for this year’s Wasatch Back Student Art Show was selected.

Art and the Environment garnered over 900 entries from students in Summit and Wasatch counties, presenting a wide range of creative responses — some thought-provoking, some uncomfortable, and others full of hope and heart.

The Wasatch Back Student Art Show exhibition reminds us the creative process is a powerful outlet for expression, an instigator for change, and an opportunity to reflect on our connectedness. Kimball Art Center is proud to showcase the next generation’s environmental ethos and provide these young artists a professional setting in which to showcase their work.

Join us for the public Community Reception on Friday, April 27 from 5pm – 7pm.

Groundbreaking: Innovations in Clay

January 27, 2017 by

In Groundbreaking, come see historical tableware patterns that have been reimagined across large installations, vessels that have been deconstructed and pushed almost to the point of collapse, and figures that, while rooted in traditional forms, have become canvases for approaches that are psychological, conceptual and abstracted.

For thousands of years, clay has been dug from the ground and transformed into objects of functional, symbolic or decorative use. Groundbreaking presents compelling works by 12 artists turning longstanding traditions upside down. With work by Akio Takamori, Lauren Mabry, Christina West and more, the exhibition brings together nationally-recognized artists from across the country who are creating riveting new compositions and pushing the boundaries of clay.

Exhibiting Artist Workshops & Art Talks:
Two of the exhibiting artists, Giselle Hicks and Lauren Gallaspy, will each be teaching a workshop in our Kimball Clay Studio and are both featured in an upcoming Art Talk. Join us for these exclusive experiences to learn from world-class ceramicists.

Food for Thought: Photographs by Christopher Boffoli

December 21, 2016 by

Christopher Boffoli’s photographs feature tiny people in a world of big food. Begun in 2002 and inspired by the films and television shows of his childhood, the Big Appetites series has been published in more than 100 countries around the world, and featured in the New York Times, Washington Post and Village Voice, among many more. His clever photographic vignettes evoke an uncanny likeness to the world at large and, while eminently humorous, also inspire deeper reflections of our relationship to food.
