Relevant

October 9, 2016 by

Over the past four Summers, the Kimball Art Center has hosted RELEVANT – an artist-in-residence program that pairs talented and dedicated undergraduate and graduate level art students from across the country with nationally recognized professional artists. Over eight days students created artwork for exhibition at the Kimball, attend workshops, and participate in round-table discussions with industry professionals to provide them with a greater understanding of how to build a successful career. Please join the Kimball in celebrating the success of this program through an exhibition of student and mentor artist-in-residence works from 2010 through 2013 in the Main Gallery.

Scrawls on the Walls

October 9, 2016 by

Scrawls on the Walls is the Kimball Art Center’s first exhibition of street art and was scheduled as a timely response to the recent vandalism of Banksy’s Main Street artworks.

In 2010 the worlds most famous street artist, Banksy, visited Park City during the premier of his film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, at Sundance. During this time he created ten spray-painted works in Park City and Salt Lake, two of which remain on Main Street. To protect the works from dirt, the weather, and other interference, the owners covered the murals with a layer of glass. On New Years Eve, 2013, the works were intentionally vandalized and the glass broken raising this question in the community: what does it mean to vandalize vandalism?

Scrawls on the Walls brings together local street artists for the first time in a Park City gallery. The gestural mural, controlled spray-paintings on canvas, and model replicas of train graffiti bring insight into the creative practice of some of the most innovative artists in our community.

The Time Travelers

October 9, 2016 by

Naomi Vona believes objects transport us through time, connecting the past and the present in a tangible way. Vintage photographs, in particular, carry a strong link to the past through their physicality and subjects. Vona uses these photographs as a base, layering colored tapes, shapes, and drawn lines to create new identities and meanings for the people and places in them. The Time Travelers will make you think about your personal connection to the past through your own vintage photographs and family heirlooms.

Christo & Jeanne-Claude

October 9, 2016 by

Christo and Jeanne-Claude met in Paris in 1958, marking the beginning of the most extraordinary artistic partnership of our time. Today they are most well-known for their monumental public installations in which they wrap buildings, erect curtains, outline islands, and “plant” umbrellas in the developed and undeveloped landscape. These temporary interventions are remembered through extensive original artworks created by the couple for planning and fundraising purposes leading up to the realization of each project. Kimball Art Center is proud to bring the largest U.S. collection of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s original drawings, sculptures, collages, and photographs to Park City.

The collection was organized by the Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa, CA. Exhibition Tour Management by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA.

One Nation

October 9, 2016 by

In recognition of Veteran’s Day and art therapy programs at the National Ability Center (NAC), the Kimball Art Center is hosting the dual exhibition One Nation. One’s national identity is a profound component of one’s life, influencing everything about a person and how they choose to live. Kimball is using the theme of national identity as an umbrella for exploration in the classroom through the Elementary Visual Arts (EVA) program and in the artist community through the Park City Professional Artists Association (PCPAA).

PCPAA is a group of Summit & Wasatch County visual artists working to promote exhibitions and encourage professionalism, education, networking, and the growth of the visual arts for the benefit of the community. Kimball has asked PCPAA members to create their personal, visual interpretations of national identity.

The EVA program’s mission is to allow every elementary school student in the Park City School District an experience with visual arts through their unique creativity. The goal of EVA is to provide children with a solid foundation in the visual arts which allows immediate, creative expression and creates a continued participation at higher levels of learning. EVA teachers have been working with students to create personal interpretations of the American flag while learning about Modern Art. A selection of these works will be on exhibition in the Garage Gallery November 11, 2014 – January 4, 2015.

Lost in Translation…

October 9, 2016 by

Doore is an artist as well as an educator. She is interested in a consumer driven culture and how it affects the sense of self. Her current investigations into texting as a co-cultural existence and her fascination with multimodal talk are influenced by the idea that interaction occurs “not between the sender and the recipient but between their embodied representation in each other’s mind” (Agnieszka Knas): our sense of self is in constant flux and is guided by what we think is real. This body of work, titled Lost in Translation, explores texting and how it affects the sense of self…an investigation/reflection of/on texting and its influences on human psyche, personal relationships and a society as a whole.
