Back by popular demand, Kimball Art Center will host an event designed to satisfy “curiARTsity” and explore the creative process. This open studio sampler event will be held Thursday, August 30th, from 6-8:30PM.
“We hosted a similar event in April and it sold out quickly,” noted Heather Stamenov, Kimball Art Center’s education director. “We recognize a lot of people want to sample art making before pursuing a medium, and these classes provide that opportunity. It’s a way for people to get a feel for what interests them in a social and relaxed setting.”
Participants will be able to sign up for two classes. The first class is chosen upon arrival, and sign-ups for the second class will be available after the first class. Registration for both classes are first come, first served.
“While we want people to be able to take the class of their choice, we also want to expose them to types of art making they might not have considered. It’s similar to being devoted to a literary genre, but one day getting a strong recommendation to read a book in a completely different category and loving it. Sometimes we don’t know what we’ll enjoy until we try it,” added Heather.
Attendees will be able to select two of the following classes:
Small Metals — Create a custom pendant by stamping it with meaningful letters, numbers, or a design.
Printmaking — Using stencils and images, you’ll learn about the screen printing process to create a one-of-a-kind piece.
Portrait drawing — Working from others in the class, you will learn various portrait drawing techniques while sketching poses using either charcoal or colored pencils
Ceramics — Make and decorate vases from soft clay slabs for a one-of-a-kind centerpiece.
Painting — Discover how to create a watercolor floral with dramatic design, flowing colors, and captivating light and shadows.
Welding — Try your hand at metalworking using MIG welders, oxygen/acetylene torches, plasma cutters, grinders, shapers, and cut-off tools to bend, shape, or mold ideas into art.
Demonstrations from teachers, all art materials, hors-d’oeuvres, and personalized instruction are all included in the $35/per adult price. A cash bar is also available. Doors open at 6PM for class sign up. To register, visit: https://kimballartcenter.org/classes/open-studio-evening/
In addition to the art sampler event, Heather says the Kimball Art Center is also participating in the town’s Gallery Stroll on August 31st. “Our current exhibition, Niki de Saint Phalle, is quite a coup for our community. She’s an internationally acclaimed artist and her artwork has been featured across the globe. So we will have a special tour of her exhibition and lead a discussion about her work.”
The Kimball Art Center’s Gallery Stroll event is from 6-8PM on August 31st and is free and open to the public.
