Plein Air Painting: The Living Landscape

January 27, 2025 by

How do you translate the wild complexity, vibrancy, and constant motion of the natural world into a painting that actually feels alive?

Join Johnny DeFeo for three immersive days of plein air exploration, where landscape becomes both subject and teacher. Together, we’ll investigate how to identify the essential qualities of a place—its light, rhythm, atmosphere, and energy—and transform those observations into fully realized works of art.

The workshop blends short lectures and demonstrations with both quick studies and longer-form paintings, all created on location. Rather than a traditional “paint-along,” instruction is intentionally intimate and responsive, with frequent mini-critiques and one-on-one guidance. The focus is on helping you develop your own visual language and body of work.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Confidently identify and articulate the essence of natural elements
  • Generate meaningful prompts to guide future studio practice
  • Create paintings that feel personal, descriptive, and deeply connected to place

Participants should bring their own supplies and have prior painting experience, such as a beginner class, and are ready to deepen their practice. This workshop is designed for artists ready to deepen their relationship with landscape and push their work beyond observation into expression.

$325 early bird until May 1st! Price goes up to $375 after.
