Celebrate all of our furry friends in this painting class! Students will bring in a photo of their pet to class, and Ali will lead you through basic painting exercises to help students capture their best bud on canvas. Students will be working with acrylic paints, and both kids and adults will make one painting each. All ages welcome, parental supervision required.
Saturday
Red, White, & Blue Tie Dye
Gear up for the 4th of July by making some wild and crazy tie dye t-shirts! Kids and adults register together, and they both get to make at least one tie dye t-shirt during this class. After two days, shirts will be ready to wear, just time time for the 4th! We will email students for t-shirt sizes upon registration. Students are welcome to bring up to 2 extra pieces of clothing (white leggings, socks, onesies, etc.) if they would like! All ages welcome, parental supervision required.
Portraits of Pops
Join us for a fun Father’s Day painting experience! Kids register with their Dad, Grandfather, Guardian, or Mentor and learn how to paint a portrait during this workshop. Students will learn how to compose a face, add facial features, and maybe even add detailed funny faces if students are up for a challenge! Acrylic paints and stretched canvas will be used. These paintings dry quickly, and make great gifts for your special guy. This will be a creative and silly way to spend quality time to celebrate Father’s Day. All ages welcome, parental supervision required.
Making Pottery Together: Wheel Throwing I
Learn the basics of wheel throwing! Students will learn how to throw on the wheel and will decorate and add glazes to finish their pieces. A wheel throwing demo will be given and then students will work beside their family member to each create one wheel thrown piece. Students will add hand built embellishments and paint so that their piece is ready to fire in the kilns. Due to drying and firing times, pottery will be ready to pick up 10-12 days after the class session is finished. Please note that children under 7 cannot use a wheel independently as they are not strong enough and must share a wheel with an adult!
Exhibiting Artist Workshop: Coil and Pinch // Handbuilt Vessels
Join us in the studio with exhibiting artist, Giselle Hicks! This one day workshop will focus on a fundamental clay forming technique: coil and pinch. This way of building can be used to make hand-built vessels or sculptural forms. Giselle will demonstrate her technique for making simple and complex forms with hand rolled coils and a banding wheel. Students will have the opportunity to learn her delicate technique and make their own coil and pinched forms as well.
Exhibiting Artist Workshop: Skin Deep // Innovative Overglaze Surfaces for Ceramics
Inspired by our current exhibit, Groundbreaking: Innovations in Clay? Join us in the Kimball Clay Studio with exhibiting artist Lauren Gallaspy! This workshop is designed for students to learn the basics of overglaze ceramic surfacing. Students will have an opportunity to use china paints and underglazes to create personal poetic imagery and pattern on glazed ceramic plates and/or work they bring in to decorate. The class welcomes all levels of ability from beginners to advanced ceramic artists. Whether you are looking to improve your surface patterning skills, activate ceramic vessels with painted imagery, or simply experiment with non-traditional approaches to overglazing, this class has it all. Learn about underglaze application, water-based china painting techniques, as well as metallic luster techniques. Class discussions and demonstrations will be centered on image transfer approaches, pattern development, composition, underglaze and china painting techniques, as well as some historical and contemporary examples of innovative ceramic surfaces. Students will come away with at least one decorated ceramic plate and additional decorated pieces as able.
