Sculpting the Face: Exploration and Observation

January 28, 2025 by

Join us for an engaging and in-depth exploration of the structures of the face through clay sculpting! Students of all skill levels are welcome! Students will learn about proportion, shape, line, and texture, while also relying on observation to create a 1:1 scale self-portrait. This workshop is great for students wanting to challenge their clay skills beyond the vessel, painting/drawing students who want to explore 3D anatomical variations of the face, or anyone wanting to try their hand at sculpting in clay.

Emphasis will be placed on sculpting boldly; as well as experimentation and play. Sculptures will be glazed, fired, and ready to pick up in two weeks.

All work will be fired and ready for pick up in the Kimball Art Center lobby 7-14 days after your class. We do not ship class work. If artwork is not picked up after 60 days it will be recycled. *Since artwork may look different after firing, make your pottery or sculpture recognizable by carving a signature into your piece.

Plein Air Painting: Personalizing the Landscape

January 27, 2025 by

This three-day plein air landscape painting workshop will focus on formal painting concepts and nurturing individuality.

Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding color to build form and space that is truthful to one’s experiences of the landscape, through tone and temperature, but is also a personal representation. Students will practice the  balance of finding solidity & structure with spontaneity and expression, while embracing the adventure of plein air painting.

The three day course will start in the studio with a presentation of key concepts. Then each day the class will meet offsite to paint, learn and receive feedback.

Prior oil painting experience recommended.
