What are the elements that make up a good landscape painting, and how do we go about it? With these questions in mind, both the beginner as well as the experienced student will explore the art of landscape painting through discussion, hands on indoor and outdoor work, and the study of light and shadow. Various methods and materials will be discussed as we work from life and reference material. Students will begin with drawing, and later move into painting. We will work outside in the Park City area, looking for subjects that spark our interest. All levels of ability are welcome in this class.
Sunday
Drawing and Painting the Horse
This unique 2 -day workshop will expose the beginner as well as the experienced student painter/drawer to outdoor animal work. We will combine studio and fieldwork including presentations, demos and slide shows in addition to one on one instruction as students practice drawing and painting. First we will spend time in the studio learning a little about horse anatomy, gesture, understanding different types of light and shadow, and the common outdoor palette. A look at current and past horse paintings /sculpture will also be included. Finally, we will spend time outdoors painting and drawing horses around the Park City area, getting a feel for this fun and interesting genre.
Plein Aire in Oils: Workshop II
Nancy Paris Pruden is an award winning artist from Houston, Texas who has taught workshops in Mexico, France, Ireland, and Italy as well as the U.S. She will be teaching two workshops this summer here in Park City with an emphasis on painting Plein Air. The workshop is open to all levels from experienced artists wanting to expand their knowledge to novice painters looking for a solid foundation in the basics of oil painting. After a morning introduction with instructional material and a demonstration at the Kimball Art Center, the class will go to various locations near town to paint outdoors, weather permitting. If we are rained out, classes will continue at the Kimball Art Center with photos provided. The workshop will concentrate on composition, color mixing, atmospheric perspective, edges, color temperatures, and values. Further information about Nancy Paris Pruden is available on her website: www.parispruden.com.
Pocket Sketching Workshop
Explore Park City as you learn the technique of pocket sketching with Kath Macaulay. This quick-draw technique allows anyone to “journal” wherever they are using only a 4 x 6 art pad, a pen, a small paint set, a brush and a film canister of water. Perfect for hiking, sitting in a café or standing in line — take it anywhere, whip it out in a minute, and preserve a memory in 25 minutes or less. With a pocket sketch it’s more about capturing the “feel” of a place rather than simply taking a camera image. This workshop is ideal for timid beginners who want to fearlessly paint in public, for experienced artists who want minimal equipment with no clean-up, and for anyone wanting a truly intimate record of what you think you see. Kath Macaulay has shown at Robert N. Blair, Buffalo, NY (in the Metropolitan, Corcoran and Whitney Galleries), Bong Wai Chen, Portland, OR (known as the Asiatic World’s top painter of the butterfly), Nicholas Brigante, and Los Angeles (collected extensively by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art). She has taught at Canyon Ranch, Tucson; Sedona Arts Center, Sedona, AZ; Sun Valley Art Center, ID; Mt. Vernon, WA; Jackson Hole, WY; Evergreen, CO; Dillman’s Lac du Flambeau, WI.
Intro to Adobe Illustrator Workshop
Spend your Sunday morning at the Park City Library with Janice in this crash course in Adobe Illustrator! Adobe Illustrator is a program used by both artists and graphic designers to create vector images. These images will then be used for company logos, promotional uses or even personal work, both in print and digital form. It is typically used to create illustrations, charts, graphs, logos, diagrams, cartoons of real photographs, and more. First, students will sketch with Janice to draft their idea to get started. Then, Janice will lead steps in how to transfer that image to the computer, and will dive into the software to convert lines into vectors and fill with pattern and colors. If you’re interested in learning more about Adobe Illustrator, enroll in our introductory course today! It’ll teach you everything you need to know to get started.
