Painters of the Wasatch Mountains

October 9, 2016 by

A distinct painting development with regard to the American West’s Wasatch Range emerged in the nineteenth century and persists even today. These “painters of the Wasatch” have set many precedents through their artistic interpretations of this mountain subject matter. The retrospective exhibit, drawn from the 2005 collector’s book “Painters of the Wasatch Mountains” and produced in a collaboration with the Utah Museum of Art and History, is a survey of the gamut of painters who formed and have carried forward an expression of nature’s mighty gift to both visitors and residents of Utah.

As natural successor to the Hudson River School in the East, the “Wasatch School” persists because of the values we associate with that first of America’s art movements — a dedication to place, a careful study, and interpretation of the environment in a spiritual and cultural context. The painters of the Wasatch are not defined by a particular style or medium but by a physical presence that has unlimited appeal and inspiration.

Many paintings on loan from both museums, artists and private collectors will be on display, from the earliest examples of painting in the nineteenth century, to works by Utah’s contemporary artists.

Cities, Circuits or Cilia?

October 9, 2016 by

Michael Amici, Jr. turned himself into a porcupine by drawing quills on his entire body at age 4, then it was a gum, hair, toothpick dodecahedron sculpture on the side of his mother’s head. A canvas for Michael could be a wall or bed sheet, a safety helmet or a microwave oven. What is shown here at the Kimball Art Center are works that made it onto paper or canvas, some collage, some acrylic, some walnut and India ink, some resin and some pieces with as much art on the back as on the front.

Michael lived in Park City from age 3 on. He spent some time in public school, private school and homeschool. He earned his GED and attended several quarters at the University of Utah. Michael could talk to you about anything from the intricacies of fences to Russian literature; 1980’s computer to the Dokdo Islands, or the connection between Malthus, television and inertial humanity. Michael had an understanding of all things hidden and a true sense of the unobserved. He was able to quantify the mystic, the down to earth and the impractical and synthesize them into a cohesive work.

When questioning Michael about what his art pieces were all about, the persistent observer would ask, are they CITIES or CIRCUITS or something microscopic like CILIA? Michael would just smile at you quixotically and keep on drawing.

Soldier Boy. Soldier Girl

October 9, 2016 by

Photographer Lynn Blodgett has been taking pictures since the age of 10. In 2007, after studying photography with world renowned portrait photographer Andrew Eccles and distinguished photo-editor Laurie Kratochvil, Lynn’s photo’s of the homeless were published in his book “Finding Grace, the Face of America’s Homeless.” The work was named by American Photo as one of the top 10 photography books of the year, and received nation wide praise.

Lynn’s newest body of work “Soldier Boy. Soldier Girl,” will be exhibited in the Kimball Art Center’s Garage Gallery from October 18th- December 1st, 2013. The dramatically lit portraits feature two ‘soldiers’, one male, one female, dressed in the military uniforms of every war fought by the United States. While the technology and clothing change from image to image, the two models remain the same, symbolizing the constant human element of warfare. Even as the style and appearance of war is modified over time, the bravery, valor and sacrifice of soldiers never falters. Lynn’s work shows the dignity of the armed forces throughout America’s history, and visually represents how the cost of conflict does not change.
