This Handbuilding class introduces students to the fundamental techniques of working with clay using the slab method. The course covers essential skills such as clay preparation, forming, and basic construction techniques. Through hands-on practice and guided instruction students will develop a solid foundation in slab work handbuilding and produce unique functional ceramic pieces that reflect their personal style and creativity like platters, bowls, vases, and more. All levels welcome: beginning students would learn, basic slab, and assembling techniques, experimenting with different templates, and how to introduce textures into their pieces. More advanced students can strengthen their techniques and create templates and textures of their own.
Note on firing: All work will be fired and ready for pick up in the Kimball Art Center 7-14 days after your class. We do not ship class work. If artwork is not picked up after 60 days it will be recycled. *Since artwork may look different after firing, make your pottery or sculpture recognizable by carving a signature into your piece.
The $50 material fee includes a bag of clay, with options including Rods Bod, Death Valley, and Stoney White. Porcelain is not included. Students wishing to use porcelain can get their material fee refunded and purchase porcelain separately at the front desk.
