Unwind from the work week and enjoy your Saturday morning in the studio. This class is back by popular demand! Grab an easel or a drawing horse, bring a pad of paper, your preferred drawing medium and your creativity. A nude and/or draped model will be present to pose. Students will work with the model to communicate positions, quick draw exercises or extended time draws, etc., which will allow students to continue their study of the figure. There is no instructor during this open studio session, so it is suggested that students who register have figure drawing experience. Wake & Draw is meant to be a creative meeting place for artistic people to share their techniques and skills in a community setting. Come by and try it! Space is limited to 10 students, so please register in advance to reserve your space. This class is for adults 18+ only.

Introduction to Drawing Still Life
Draw what you see, not what you know. Look, explore and discover the truth of the subject still life. Seeing lines, finding shapes, values and edges. Comparative thinking and how light affects value, contrast and form. What is dark in light and what is light in shadow. Also learning design, placement and proportion. A good painting has to start with a good drawing!
Paper Marbling & Origami Workshop
Students will take a crash course in Suminagashi, which is the ancient art of Japanese marbling on paper! Using our secret ingredients, kids will have a blast learning how to marble paper in beautiful colors. While the paper dries, kids will make a small origami sculpture from one piece of paper.
Folded Books
Take a folded books workshop taught by visiting artist Nicole Pietrantoni, whose work will be featured in the Kimball’s Main Gallery (Nicole Pietrantoni: Alas, Alack, February 10–April 15, 2018)! Students will get to explore a series of simple folded structures–accordion, snake book, x-book and pants book. After practicing the four different structures with color copy paper, students will select one structure to make a more refined book using collage, writing/journaling and drawing to fill its pages. By the end of the class, students will have a finished product they get to take home. This workshop is recommended for teens and students who are 8 and older.
Making Wind Chimes Together
Students learn the basics of clay handbuilding by exploring slab and coil techniques to make uniquely designed wind chimes to hang on your porch or in your home! A great family activity for summer! Due to drying and firing times, clay wind chimes will be ready 12-14 days after the class session is completed.
