This six-week course introduces students to the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel, covering essential techniques, trimming, and glazing applications. Designed for beginners, this class ensures a tailored learning experience to meet their specific needs. A series of skill-building practices will introduce you to the joys of working with clay on the wheel. The basic skills of wheel-thrown pottery will be taught through step-by-step instruction in clay preparation, throwing on the wheel, trimming, handles, and the firing process. Students will learn how to throw a cylinder, cup, and bowls. We emphasize this class structure to provide beginner students with focused instruction, making the most of the invaluable learning opportunities offered by our qualified instructors. If you’ve taken this course more than three times, we ask that you enroll in one of our more intermediate or advanced classes.
Note on firing: All work will be fired and ready for pick up in the Kimball Art Center 7-14 days after your class. We do not ship class work. If artwork is not picked up after 60 days it will be recycled. *Since artwork may look different after firing, make your pottery or sculpture recognizable by carving a signature into your piece.
The $50 material fee includes a bag of clay, with options including Rods Bod, Death Valley, and Stoney White. Porcelain is not included. Students wishing to use porcelain can get their material fee refunded and purchase porcelain separately at the front desk.
